Step 1: Location Of The IP Address and System Name Of The Server And Workstation.

  • You are required to log into the server with administrator rights.
  • Open Run Dialogue box by pressing Windows + R.
  • Now you have to type cmd in the dialogue box and then press Enter key.
  • In the Comand Prompt, type ipconfig/all and select Enter.
  • Please write down the Host Name i.e. computer name and the ID Address.
  •  Continue repeating same process again and again for other systems connected to the server.

Step 2: Window Host File Editing

  • Firstly, close QuickBooks software and all the windows related to it.
  • Open window and click on Start menu.
  • Now navigate either of the following:
  1. C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc
  2. C:\Windows\Syswow64\Drivers\Etc
  • Click on the Hosts file.
  • Open Notepad from Window.
  • Mention IP Address in front of the Computer name (Server contains the workstation IP and system name and on the other hand, the workstation contains the server IP and system name.) press the TAB key on your keyboard while providing this information to differentiate between the IP Address and computer name.
  • In the end, when you are finish both the steps, please open QuickBooks again in multi-user mode to make sure if the error is rectified or not.

NOTEThis error might have been caused due to the rebooting process of the server containing a different IP address than that configured in the HOSTS file if your network is using DYNAMIC addressing. You are supposed to configure the Window server for maintaining the same address for your network each time. 

What If It Demands You To Save The Host File?

It would be easy for you save the file if you are using Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 because these windows have Save As option due to the availability of UAC.

Despite these windows, if you have any other system. In that case, you have to follow the steps that are mentioned below for saving the HOSTS file:

  • Open the Save As window and type Hosts in the File Name column.
  • As location, select Desktop option.
  •  Open Desktop and the you have to right-click on the HOSTS file.
  •   Now select Copy option.

  • Now you need to navigate : C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc
  • Locate and select the Hosts file.
  • Now, right-click on the file and select the Rename option.
  • Type OLD at the end of the name of the file and select it.
